St Luke's Anglican Church was built by George Bee and designed by Thomas Cooper. The building was consecrated by Bishop William Williams on 20th September 1874. The side chapel was completed in 1881 and further additions designed by William Rush were finished in 1913. The tower was badly damaged in the 1931 earthquake and was removed. A new tower built in 1999 along with extensive new additions to the west end. The large notable oak tree is also a significant landmark and can be seen as a 3.5m seedling in a photograph taken in circa 1913-20. |
