HAVELOCK NORTH

Situated at the heart of Hawke’s Bay Wine Country, Havelock North Village nestles on the Heretaunga plains at the foot of spectacular Te Mata Peak.   The majestic “Sleeping Giant” silhouette formed by the crags on the skyline provides a dramatic backdrop. Havelock North is a vibrant village in the middle of one of the most charming locations in the world, Hawkes Bay Wine Country. We offer visitors the best of everything: world class wineries, top-notch award winning restaurants and an incredibly diverse selection of accommodation from luxury lodges to comfy bed & Breakfasts and homestays.

Named after a hero of the Indian Mutiny, Sir Henry Havelock, the Village has grown enormously since the first sections were auctioned in 1860 and is now a highly desirable residential area.  The vibrant center combines the charm of a village with cosmopolitan flair and there are plenty of attractive places to sit and soak up the atmosphere and the sunny Mediterranean climate.

THE LEGEND OF TE MATA PEAK

According to Maori legend Te Mata hillscape is a sleeping giant, with the hill being the body of Maori Chief, Te Mata O Rongokako. Rongokako, a giant of a man, preyed upon the Heretaunga. The Heretaunga Chief's daughter was very beautiful and after seeing her, he decided to woo rather than make war. She set him many seemingly impossible tasks, which he accomplished until she told him to eat his way through the hill. The giant began to plough his way through the hill but choked on a large rock and dropped to the ground where he still lies today.

There is a fantastic brochure available form Village Info with all the walkways and the full history of     Te Mata Trust Park.  Call in or e-mail us for the brochure. Also visit www.havelocknorthNZ.com
